Montessori Toddler Work Shelves at 26 Months

It's been a little while since I've updated the things on Teddy's shelves. At just over 2-years-old, he still isn't a child that is super into using toys and materials. Through my observation of him, I've determined that he gets overwhelmed fairly easily. If we have too many choices available then he tends to just ignore all his work shelves. So I recently went and really slimmed down the choices so that he can more easily see and choose work on his own.

As always, I want to remind you that Teddy is just one child and the toys/work that your toddler may be interested in might be different that Teddy's. Even comparing him to his siblings is not very helpful because they are all so different. So use posts like this only for inspiration, not as some sort of definitive Montessori curriculum or set of must-haves.

Here's a look at his toy choices:
  1. Shape Sorting Beads: Ours is from MontiKids (similar). I love this is an easier fine motor challenge for him but he loves posting/pegging work. This calls attention to different shapes.
  2. Small Knobbed Puzzles: This is small circles but I rotate these frequently (option 1 | option 2)
  3. Flip Lid Shape Sorter
  4. Threading Rings: Ours are also from MontiKids, but there are lots of other options available. I like these because they have a nice large ring and a wooden threader. (similar threader | option 2)
  5. Basket of Cars
  6. Color Sorting Pegs DIY
  7. Small baby doll
  8. Color Sorting Rings: (option 1 | option 2)

I've done my best to link the products that Ted is using or similar alternatives. Some of our toys are now approaching 10-years-old and it's getting harder to find exact copies. Again, use this as inspiration not as an exact template for your child's play.

What is your new-2 interested in playing with?
