How We've Used a Sheepskin

One of the things that makes Montessori baby spaces a bit different than traditional baby areas is the focus on simplicity and beauty. A Montessori baby space should be calm, peaceful, and beautiful, but still interesting. A sheepskin rug is often found Montessori baby spaces for this reason. A good sheepskin can provide a natural warmth, beauty and texture that is perfect for a baby space.

If you are uncomfortable using a real sheepskin, a faux sheepskin or other small calming rug could be used in the same ways. I know that it may not be everyone's preference.

So, how have we used our sheepskin? It's use has changed from the time Gus was born until now!

Early Days

In Gus's newborn days, the sheepskin was a perfect place to set him down on the floor. He typically was also on his topponcino, but the sheepskin provided a bit of warmth (it was winter) and softness from the hard floor. It also provided a close space where the older children could be next to Gus, but still gave a clear line where they shouldn't sit. Plus, let's be honest, it was a great photo background!

Young Baby

After the newborn days, the sheepskin was still used as a play space. I could move it where ever I needed Gus to play when he wasn't in his movement area. Again, it was still the perfect cozy spot for him to hang out. I could add his play gym, give him a toy or put him under a mobile. It was a great place for him to hang out. It also provided an interesting texture for his hands.

Mobile Baby

Even as a more mobile baby, the sheepskin has been a great tool to have around for us! At first, it was a great tummy-time motivator because Gus loved the feeling of the rug in his hands. Then, it was a wonderful little pad next to his floor bed as he learned to roll and wiggle out. The sheepskin didn't slide around so it was perfect to sit next to the bed. It was a soft landing place for many months next to his floor bed.

Toddler

Now that Gus is older, he no longer needs anything to soften his climb out of bed! So, the sheepskin provides the perfect cozy spot to read. Placing it in a cozy corner at the end of his bed with a basket of books has been a lovely, favorite spot.

We used a fleecy blanket with our baby because of spit up and regurgitated milk - was this an issue for your family? Love the cozy sheepskin!

Love this, and was only talking to my husband about how useful a sheepskin is, and how well it grows with the child...we used ours the same as yours as a little one, and now that he is moving, it is covering one half of our fireplace, cushioning the sharp edges, with a long cushion covering the other half! A cosy book corner sounds like a great use next...
