The Montessori Bell Rattle -- Montessori Baby Week 14

It has been an exciting week around here for Augustus. Out of nowhere, sudden Gus' hands are his tools and he can finally bring them to his mouth at will. Not only that, but he can bring a toy all the way to his mouth. For some reason this reminded me that it was probably time to introduce the Montessori bell rattle

This simple and soothing traditional Montessori baby toy is a perfect first toy. The slight jingle of the bells with the motion of the baby's hand is just enough to grab their attention without being overwhelming.

The simple rattle helps to strengthen the grasping reflex as well as helping the baby make the connection between the sound and the motion of his or her hand. Its the perfect size for the baby's little hand.

Gus has been a little on the slower side for grasping objects and tracking them, so while this was the prefect time for him to be introduced to the bell rattle, some babies may be ready a bit sooner. And, he probably could have had this a bit sooner too, but he loves his metal rings so much that I didn't push it. No matter what week this toy is introduced, it can be one of the first toys your baby uses. And, would be perfect starting between 2 and 3 months when a baby starts to show a strong grasping reflex.

Make Your Own Montessori Bell Rattle

The bell rattle is an easy DIY project! To make it, you need a small dowel cut to about 3 inches, two small eye hooks and a couple of bells. Once the dowel is cut to size, sand it down to remove sharp or uncomfortable edges. Then, you can screw one of the eye hooks into each end of the dowel. I needed a pair of pliers in order to get the hook all the way in.

Once the hook is set, use the pliers to open the hook and place the bell. Once the bell is in place, close the hook. Before giving it to your baby, make sure the hooks and bell are firmly in place. And, that's it!

This easy DIY was a favorite of Nora when she was a baby. And, it has been a big hit with Gus as well. If you aren't up to making your own bell rattle, some of my favorite Montessori baby material shops also sell them. Check Here and Here

Thank you for sharing! I am sadly not very crafty, but that looks simple enough that I could probably manage it :) Gus looks like he's thoroughly enjoying it!

Adorable! but I would be so afraid that the bell would come off and the baby could choke. Did you had this problem?
