F is for Farm -- Tot School

This past week in tot school was so fun! I've been waiting to do a farm theme during letter F week and it totally paid off. Henry is away for the first time ever, so we only had a few tot school days, so we are going to continue the theme again this coming week! Prior to this week, Henry could identify and say the letter F, but struggled with identifying the lower case f.

On our first tray was a set of Montessori 3-part cards that I made for various farm animals. Then, there was a corresponding bin of animals to match each card. Henry could then match the 3-part cards together with the toy animal.

Henry really enjoyed these. He had a blast playing with the toys and matching them to the cards. He had a more difficult time matching all the 3-part cards and couldn't match the words, but he did attempt them at least. He also insisted that the horse and foal stay together at all times -- so cute!

The second tray was a fruit color matching game. I had a small basket of play fruits and a bunch of corresponding colored stacking cups. Henry could then sort each fruit by color. This wasn't a challenge for Henry but he absolutely loved it and did this over and over. He also loved to try and balance the basket on his head!

The final tray was a four piece wooden block puzzle {Just a side note, I don't think these are Melissa and Doug, I just used that box to contain the tray}. Depending on how the blocks are arranged, you can make up to six different farm animals. I knew this would be difficult for Henry so I made some cards with pictures of the animals so he could know what his options were what each object was.

As I guessed, this was really hard for Henry. Instead of trying to do the puzzle himself, he like to pick a card and watch me make the picture from the blocks. This was still great though, because it helped him learn new animal names and sounds and he did attempt the puzzle a few times. I hope over the next week he gets better about trying for himself.

Finally, we had a letter F sensory bin. Usually the sensory bin is Henry's favorite thing to play with, but this week he loved the trays so much that the bin barely got touched. Hopefully, next week plays a little more with the F items!

We did quite a few additional letter F and farm related activities this week. And, I have a few more lined up for this  coming week. So, since we are repeating the theme, I think I'll share all those in my next update!

I love the farm set up! I found some of the same frogs and chunky frog erasers at Target - looking forward to being able to use them soon at our house, as well! It definitely looks like he has a great week - and a good week for them, means a good week for mommy! :)

Love this theme! Your little guy is so smart! Where did you get the set of plastic farm animals?

I borrowed them from Henry's school's toy library. Sorry, I know that's not much help.
